“The Conway Cemetery Book”
is now available!
Compiled by Brian Wiggin and Ken and Jane Rancourt,
It began to take shape back in the fall.
We started out with 42 known cemeteries in the town,
and during the course of research,
we were able to document 51 in the Conways.
It’s part of our contribution to town history,
as part of the ongoing “Conway Celebrates Legacy” yearlong series of events
leading up to the 250th anniversary of the town’s founding on Oct. 1, 1765.
The 68-page book contains
at least one photograph of each cemetery or graveyard,
along with road directions and a GPS coordinate for each.
There is also a map of Conway, showing all the graves,
along with historical information and family names.

Cost is $15 for Conway Historical Society members or $20 for non-members.
(Cost to join the CHS is $20 per year,
which includes admission to all events and a quarterly newsletter).

“The Neighbors’ War” – William Marvel
The Conway Historical Society is proud to announce the publication of William Marvel’s new book, “The Neighbors’ War.” This book is newly published and has been prepared just in time for the Town of Conway 250th anniversary celebration
“Conway was a Copperhead town, where most voters opposed Abraham Lincoln’s war. Dozens of citizens nevertheless served in the Union army, but with diverse motives. Some undoubtedly believed in the value of national unity, some sought adventure, and many more were poor enough to need the pay, but most of them responded to escalating offers of cash bounties. The folks at home attended to business, devoting little attention to the war until the strain of filling the armies set them against each other.”

Janet MacAllister Hounsell, born October 2, 1926 in Canaan, VT, graduated from Lancaster Academy, Lancaster, NH and was employed as a telegrapher by the Western Union Tel. Co. before her marriage.She worked as a reporter-photographer for the North Conway Reporter from 1971 to 1983, when she retired.
In her late years, she reported the Conway news and popular “Geezer” items for the Conway Daily Sun; her “I See by the Paper” appeared weekly in the Carroll County Independent and “Hill and Vales Tales” in the Berlin Reporter.
She self-published a soft cover book, “Middle Age Spread” in the 1970’s. In 1998 she completed “Conway, NH, 1765-1997” for the Horne Book Committee of the Conway Historical Society. She was a member and officer of that organization for many years.
